Objective: This article provides an overview of the board certification process necessary to attain the status of a chiropractic specialist. The objective is to enhance the awareness of Diplomate status, which is required to be a chiropractic specialist.
Discussion: Chiropractic is not a specialty but a profession. Similar to medicine, chiropractic specialization is an elective choice and not a mandatory requirement to practice. Currently, only a small percentage of the American chiropractic physicians (DC) pursue specialty status. Whereas, more than half of active physicians (MD/DO) in America are board certified specialists.
Conclusion: Only chiropractic physicians that complete a designated course of postdoctoral training and pass specialty board examinations are credentialed as Diplomates and entitled to be called chiropractic specialists.
