Objective: The objective of this study was to summarize the laws, statutes, and regulations regarding patient informed consent on the websites of from all United States (US) jurisdictional boards governing chiropractic licensure.
Methods: Data was collected from the board websites of all US jurisdictions governing chiropractic practice including: 1) regulatory language relevant to informed consent for chiropractic practice, 2) web location where content was identified, 3) oral or written delivery requirements, and 4) which specific components of informed consent were outlined.
Results: Websites from all 50 states, 1 district, and 5 territories were reviewed. Patient informed consent relevant to chiropractic practice was not reported by more than half of the jurisdictions (n=29, 53%). Websites listed written consent as required by 18% (n=10), and few provided guidance on what chiropractic providers should include in their informed consent.
Conclusion: Guidance for patient informed consent on regulatory websites was heterogeneous, and most jurisdictions offered no guidance specifically related to chiropractic practice.
