Abstract/Notes

The focus of this commentary is to discuss the concept of lifestyle medicine applied to the function of the spine and musculoskeletal system. The chiropractic profession established itself as a unique model of care based on the natural functions of the human body over a century ago. Yet, there is disagreement on how the profession should move forward, emphasizing the foundations from the past and the evidence-informed, patient-centered standards required for all 21st century health care providers. This article presents an approach to patient care well within the scope of the profession that focuses on health of the spine and musculoskeletal system by adopting lifestyle medicine. Public health conditions are reviewed to reveal how such a focus could enhance the quality and years lived free of disease and disability. This approach supports the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) position that chiropractic should be involved in public health initiatives.
