Abstract/Notes His weekly essay on the editorial page of the Baltimore Evening Sun seldom failed its intended purpose: to shock with "damning frankness." "(He) had a way of putting into print the things that most people confine to conversations among their intimates." (1) Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was one of the most influential and controversial authors who ever took aim at the platitudes of American culture. But new evidence, including his own diary (2), reveals him as a treacherous, insufferable pompous, thoroughly bigoted, double-dealing, two-timing, sexist, racist fool. Even his workaday journalism has lately been criticized.
