Lipids occupy a distinguished place as a modifiable vascular risk factor.  Over the last 40 years, in countries where a significant reduction in athersclerosis cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) was found the primary contributions came from reductions in lipids, blood pressure, and smoking rates.  Both total cholesterol (TC) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) are considered "the most important independent predictors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality."
