| Abstract/Notes |
The literature relating to ankylosing hyperostosis was reviewed. Its incidence, nature, diagnosis and treatment, and a case report are given. Ankylosing hyperostosis is a disease rearely found before age 40 years and has a strong association with obesity and latent diabetes. It appears to occur secondary to increased somatotrophin output common to aging and obesity. This factor indicates dietary control to be a primary treatment consideration. Manipulative therapeutics may be indicated; the origin of musculo-skeletal pain in these patients is rarely ankylosing hyperostosis and may be a mechanical joint lesion, as in the case presented.
