A systematic approach to the motion examination of the lumbar spine is presented. Methods of lumbar motion palpation are demonstrated with consideration given to the pathological changes accompanying the decompensating lumbar spine. Segmental spinal fixation and instability are illustrated both clinically and radiographically with a discussion of the significance of these findings.
