A review of the anatomy of the soft tissue in close proximity to the hip joint is presented. Previous studies of the capsular shadow were reviewed, and a roentgenological evaluation of the capsular fat plane as observed on anteroposterior full spine films was conducted. Measurements were made on those cases where the fat plane was roentgenologically demonstrable. A diversity in the study population was noted. Measurements above 1.2 cm are considered abnormal; such abnormality suggesting more than a moderate increase in intra-articular fluid.
