The basic background information needed to initiate an efficient online literature search is presented. The logical operators "and", "or", and "not" are introduced. Indexing conventions, main headings, and check tags are explained. Those data bases most frequently used by biomedical researchers are briefly described. Sources of citations for works not included in computerized data bases are mentioned.
