The term "respiratory style" is used to describe the phase and time relationships between measured anterior surface / volume changes in the abdominal region resulting from contraction of the diaphragm during inspiration and the concurrent corresponding anterior surface / volume changes in the thoracic region resulting from contraction of the intercostal and other muscles during inspiration. Whether because of cultural, cosmetic, or other reasons, constraints on natural diaphragmatic events during inspiration are common in the United States. This article describes a simple test which may be used to rapidly determine the respiratory style of a subject, and to permit a biofeedback approach to retraining, if necessary.
