A review of some of the original hypotheses of chiropractic theory relating to innate intelligence and spinal subluxation, along with some contemporary hypotheses relating to hyperactive pain / reflex generator mechanisms, are presented in an effort to provide an organized explaination of how chiropractic spinal manipulation may influence the central nervous system to effect relief of chronic pain and tonic reflex syndromes. On the basis of recent theories proposed by Melzack, Wall and others, it was concluded that the chiropractic manipulative thrust may induce normalization of hyperactive pain / reflex generator mechanisms via normal central nervous system regulatory mechanisms. In the light of presently available data to support this conclusion, further study is considered appropriate.
