Abstract/Notes

The incidence of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is steadily increasing in our current population.  Onset of T1D is determined by genetic susceptibility and environmental factors that trigger an autoimmune reaction.  While it is difficult to determine the exact environmental factors that trigger the autoimmune response in T1D, research has found a strong correlation between the decline in health of the intestinal microbiome and the progression to T1D diagnoses.  Research presented in this article suggests that maintenance of a health intestinal microbiome through dietary modification and nutritional supplementation can be a safe and effective option for therapeutic intervention of T1D.
