Abstract/Notes

Lithium is one of the oldest drugs in psychiatry. In low doses, in it's natural form, it has been found to have some remarkable health effects. It's importance for humans may be understated. There is not a lot of research on low dose lithium, but the existing research shows it may protect the brain against mental illness, promote longevity, decrease suicides and aggressive behavior, may provide neuroprotective effects in neurogenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, play a part in fetal development, help with fighting infections, and even support fracture repair. The significance for clinical nutritionists is for low dose lithium is as a protective and supportive agent for the physiology and for mental health [sic].
