| Abstract/Notes |
It is fitting that the bold new profession of chiropractic would have as its first book the two volume set of Modernized Chiropractic. Published in 1906, Modernized Chiropractic attempted to encompass the best in chiropractic utilizing a writing style that is powerful and at times flamboyant. The authors of this seminal text, Drs. Oakley Smith, Solon Langworthy and Minora Paxson, stated that the book presented, "A Correct Philosophy, a Well Developed Technique, a Dependable System of Diagnosis and a Reliable and Extensive System of Correction." In 1993, a Textbook of Clinical Chiropractic: A Specific Biomechanical Approach, attempted to encompass the Gonstead Method, whose procedures are incorporated into over half of today's chiropractic practices. By comparing the areas of philosophy, technique, diagnosis, and correction as expressed in Modernized Chiropractic to the treatment given those subjects in a Texbook of Clinical Chiropractic, as well as interviewing the associate editor of a Textbook of Clinical Chiropractic, a unique picture of the chiropractic profession emerges. Modern day chiropractic is a chid of its historical parents and it recognizes the tenets upon which it was established while incorporating the technological advances of the present era.
