Abstract/Notes

The "vacuum" phenomenon is the radiographic appearance of gaseous collections in a degenerating invertebral disc.  This finding is most commonly seen in the lumbar spine, infrequently in the cervical spine, and rarely in the thoracic spine. The vacuum phenomenon was first observed in 1910 by Fick while studying joints under traction.  Magnusson in 1937 described the same phenomenon in the intervertebral disc.  It was Knuttson in 1942 who first correlated the presence of the vacuum phenomenon with degenerative disc disease.
