Acetabular protrusion refers to intrapelvic displacement of the medial wall of the acetabulum.   It is usually associated with inflammatory or bone softening conditions.  Protrusion of the acetabulum can also appear in the absence of any recognizable cause, and is termed primary acetabular protrusion or idiopathic protrusio acetabuli.  The primary form was recognized by Otto in 1824 and is referred to as Otto pelvis.
