Abstract/Notes

Based upon archival and ethnographic research, this paper traces the development of chiropractic in Britain and Europe from its beginnings there shortly after the turn of the century.  Special attention is given to the role of the European Chiropractors’ Union in consolidating the chiropractic profession in various countries.  Although the Union has attempted over the years to include practitioners utilizing a wide range of healing modalities, many mixers, at least in Britain, converted themselves into naturopaths and osteopaths.  Conversely, chiropractors affiliated with the Union have tended to practice a form of chiropractic closer to the straight tradition in America.
