Abstract/Notes The metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors linked to overweight/obesity, physical inactivity and genetic factors that increase the chances for heart disease and other health problems such as diabetes and stroke. The term "metabolic" refers to the biochemical processes involved in the body's normal functioning. Increasing scientific evidence favors natural treatment strategies and preventive measures in managing an ever increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes challenging the current pharmaceutical based treatment/preventative approach. In this paper I will present scientific evidence demonstrating that lifestyle improvements are first in line when it comes to treating and preventing heart disease and diabetes even in patients with genetic predispositions to these diseases.
