Abstract/Notes The diagnosis of migraines in children and adolescents can be similar to that in adults but there are differences. For instance, in children and adolescents the duration may be much shorter than what is typically seen in adult migraines and the presentation may often times be bilateral. Migraines occur in up to 10.6 % of children between the ages of 5-15 years 1, and in 28% of children aged 15-19 years.2 Therefore, migraines may be classified as one of the top 5 health problems of childhood. Just as symptoms differ in adult versus children migraine sufferers, acceptable and effective treatments can vary as well. Studies over the years have revealed much useful information about the prevention, onset, and treatment of migraines in adults. But even though the peak onset for migraine headaches is around 15 years of age, there is less research on migraines in children and teens.
