Abstract/Notes Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a condition involving the function of the small intestine that affects the lives and health of many patients. SBS occurs when the small bowel is shortere than normal or has problems with the way it functions (6-Physicians' Desk Reference, 2008) and comprises the sequelae of nutrient, fluid, and weight loss that occurs subsequent to greatly reduced functional surface area of the small intestine (8-Sundaram, Koutkia, & Apovian, 2002).
