Abstract/Notes The ancient notions of vital force express the dynamic features of life and living matter. These notions permeate all the facets of traditional cultures whereas they have been controversial for centuries in Western societies. One modern interpretation of the puzzling specificity of living matter has been vitalism. This school of thought, which originated in mechanism, has evolved in time; and a historical overview reveals its various facets and significance. Nowadays, vitalism is dear to many chiropractors in a strange conceptual encounter that associates opposite worldviews.
